    Landmark Charges For Dealer In Fentanyl Death

    First case in Hillsborough County where an individual/dealer, has been arrested and federally indicted for the distribution of Fentanyl
    resulting in the death of an individual.

    State Charges: Delivery of Narcotics to Undercover Detectives

    Details:

    Hillsborough County detectives, working in conjunction with the United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida, arrested and charged Corey Damond Smith, Jr., following an indictment by a federal grand jury, with the federal charge of Distribution of Fentanyl Resulting in Death. Smith was indicted on these charges stemming from the overdose death of an individual in Hillsborough County on 11/13/17 after using illegal drugs Smith sold him. This is the first time these types of charges have been applied in Hillsborough County in this manner. He faces a mandatory penalty of life in federal prison.

    During the scope of this effort, Jeffery Rodriguez and Donald Calvin Hatch, Jr. also became known to authorities. After a federal grand jury indictment, the U.S. Attorney brought federal charges against Rodriguez for Conspiring to Distribute Heroin and Fentanyl related to seven opioid overdoses. Additionally, he was charged with five counts of Distribution of Heroin and
    Fentanyl. He faces a mandatory penalty of life in federal prison.

    Donald Calvin Hatch, Jr. was also arrested by HCSO detectives on a federal criminal complaint. He was alleged to be responsible for distributing Heroin and Fentanyl as a middleman for Rodriguez. Hatch pleaded guilty on June 6, 2018 to an information alleging a conspiracy to distribute Heroin and Fentanyl. He faces a maximum penalty of 30 years imprisonment. His sentencing
    is pending.
