A vehicle struck and killed a horse early this morning causing a three car accident and shutting down parts of U.S. Highway 41 in Ruskin for several hours.

Two horses escaped from Sun City Stables and were attempting to cross US Highway 41 about 100 feet north of Old US Highway 41A around 6:17 a.m. today. One of them was struck and killed by Ricardo Mendieta of Ruskin who was driving north in a 2007 Toyota Camry.

After the initial impact, the horse was struck by two more vehicles. Mendieta was transported to St. Joes South for non-life threatening injuries. The driver of vehicle number 2, Veronica Monsivais, who was driving a 2009 Chevy Equinox, also had minor injuries and was taken to St. Joes South.  A 2010 Toyota Corolla struck the horse as well but the driver, Jonathan Bedoya, was not injured in the accident.

US Highway 41 North was closed for several hours in order to conduct the investigation and allow the Florida Department of Transportation to facilitate roadway cleanup. The roadway has since been cleared and opened. No charges are pending in this accident.
