"Operation Clear Track"
September 23-29, 2018, law enforcement agencies across the U.S. and Canada are joining forces with Amtrak and Operation Lifesaver for the second annual "Operation Clear Track," which was created to call attention to train safety laws along railroad tracks.
On September 25, deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office joined the safety efforts by positioning themselves at two railroad track locations (East Fowler Avenue, near Nebraska Avenue and E Broadway Avenue near Tampa E Boulevard) for three hours. During the enforcement period, deputies pulled over drivers who stopped on the railroad tracks at stoplights, rather than before the tracks. They gave verbal warnings and handed out railroad safety pocket cards explaining the correct way to stop. Any pedestrians caught walking along the tracks also received a warning and educational information.
Raising public awareness about the dangers of failing to comply with railroad safety laws is a critical step in preventing railroad-related deaths and injuries.
