The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has opened an investigation about a crime trend focusing on Hispanic residents that may have resulted in multiple victims being defrauded. This information came to light after a Univision report that aired Monday night disclosing more than 40 possible victims that may have been targeted because of their immigration status.
"People preying on our residents is unacceptable," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "Our job as a local law enforcement agency is to protect all people, regardless of their immigration status, from criminals who seek to take advantage of them. We are looking into this case and working to bring those responsible to justice."
To date we have several victims that have filed a complaint. We have dedicated a phone number so victims can report their matter directly to detectives that have been specifically assigned to investigate this case. If anyone has any information or believes they are a victim of this scheme, please call (813) 247-8494. A Spanish speaker has been designated to help you with the complaint. This phone line is specifically designated for victims of this investigation. If someone is unable to answer their call, victims are asked to leave a voicemail with their contact information.
