    Boating Safety Tips:

    Details:

As part of the 2019 National Safe Boating Week, Sheriff Chad Chronister and members of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office took a moment to review some of the most important boating safety tips through a public service announcement (PSA) released on social media on Monday.

Deputy Kevin Withey, a member of the HCSO Marine Enforcement Section, displayed some of the top items every boater should have on board with them before hitting the water. The simple safety items include a whistle for emergencies, a fire extinguisher, various size life jackets and a throwable life preserver. Having a flair kit is recommended for boaters who are offshore in federal waters.

"Taking safety precautions before you set sail will leave you prepared for anything," said Sheriff Chronister. "Stick to these tips for a fun and trouble free day out on the water."

In 2017, the U.S. Coast Guard counted 4,291 accidents that involved 658 deaths, 2,629 injuries and approximately $46 million dollars of damage to property as a result of recreational boating accidents. Only 14% of deaths occurred on boats where the operator had received boating safety instruction.

National Safe Boating Week runs from May 18-24, along with Operation Dry Water, an enforcement campaign to keep people from boating under the influence.
