Job Overview

Promote a law enforcement and school relations presence in the assigned elementary/elementary magnet/charter school to ensure safety, security, and welfare of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors therein. The position is considered to be limited duration working approximately 10 months of the year with possibility of year to year renewal. The position will only exist at the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) as funding is available.

Job Location (Subject to Change)

Various schools within Hillsborough County.

Job Schedule

Work days will be Monday through Friday based on the school calendar (approximately 180 days + 10 training days).
Training is tentatively scheduled to take place between July 23, 2018 and August 9, 2018.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Note: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform some or all of the activities described below.
 
  • Patrol the assigned areas of the school building, grounds, and parking lots to deter, detect, report, and stop violations of the law and/or school board policies.
  • Maintain positive relationships with the assigned school’s administration, faculty, parents, and representatives from the School District of Hillsborough County; serve as a positive role model and mentor to the student population at all times.
  • Refer all non-criminal matters to the school administration.
  • Keep a constant check on weather and environmental conditions at the assigned school and make recommendations regarding safety associated with weather conditions that may impact the campus and student activities.
  • Maintain proficiency and qualification with weapons that may be used in the work environment.
  • May present educational programs (e.g. law enforcement, crime prevention, safety, security, and legal compliance with existing laws) to elementary school students on HCSO and the School District of Hillsborough County pre-approved programs/materials at the request of faculty, parents and students.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of local, state, and federal laws pertinent to law enforcement.
  • Working knowledge of law enforcement guidelines and criminal investigation methods and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of traffic accident control measures and investigation methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of security principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of public school and child-related laws, rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of School Board facilities and grounds.
  • Knowledge of unincorporated Hillsborough County's geographical make up.
  • Skill in the use and care of firearms and other law enforcement related equipment.
  • Skill in administering CPR and first aid.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and apply job-related information to include laws, ordinances, and school board policies.
  • Ability to work with youth and the ability to gain their respect while holding them accountable for their actions.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with diverse populations.
  • Ability to detect potentially adverse or unsafe situations and react according to department policy.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and firmly, courteously, and tactfully handle situations and enforce laws with respect for the rights of others.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and to promote good public relations.
  • Ability to physically withstand long hours of standing and/or walking.
  • Ability to pursue, apprehend, and restrain persons.

Minimum Qualification(s)

Note: Applicants must meet the following requirement(s) to be considered minimally qualified for the job.
 
Possession of a valid certification by the State of Florida as a Law Enforcement Officer; and
Two years of experience as a certified state, county, or city law enforcement deputy; and
Be a United States citizen; and
Must live in Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, or Manatee County at the time of appointment.

Additional Requirements

  • Possession of a valid Florida driver's license at time of employment. Driving history will be thoroughly reviewed and may be grounds for disqualification.
  • No illegal drug sale within lifetime.
  • No illegal drug use within the past 36 months.
  • No illegal drug use after 30 years of age.
  • No felony convictions within lifetime.
  • No misdemeanor convictions involving perjury, false statement, or domestic violence within lifetime.
  • Prior military personnel must not have a dishonorable discharge from any branch of the United States Armed Forces, the United States Coast Guard, National Guard, or Reserve Forces.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background investigation including polygraph, reference/employment/neighborhood checks, medical evaluation, and drug screening.

  • Mileage reimbursement at $0.445 per mile, subject to adjustment, based upon distance from home to assigned school (no vehicle is provided).
  • Life Insurance ($20,000) paid by HCSO.
