The Reserve II deputy program is a uniformed Sheriff's Office support organization open to all persons age 19 and older, on an equal opportunity basis. Reserve II deputies work with regular deputies on various assignments. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office takes great pride in the Reserve II deputy's civic spirit and willingness to serve.
Each Reserve II deputy must serve a minimum of 20 volunteer hours each month on assigned duties. Those hours are made up of detail assignments through out the Sheriff's Office.
The areas of service include:
- Working with a full time deputy
- Traffic Control
- Work with specialized units to include:
- Canine
- Warrants
- Selective Enforcement Squad (Street Crimes Unit)
- Vice
- Auto Theft Task Force
- Aviation
- Marine Unit
- Motorcycle Unit
- DUI Enforcement
- Various other law enforcement activities and duties to include:
- assist with surveillances
- secure crime scenes
- render aid during natural disasters and join search parties
Selected candidates will attend a 360-hour reserve academy at no expense to the individual. The academy is held Monday-Thursday, 6:00 pm- 10:00 pm and some Saturdays at Hillsborough Community College. If the individual has completed a Florida law enforcement academy their certification may be re-activated. The Sheriff's Office pays the tuition costs for this academy. Academy courses of instruction include criminal and civil law, criminal investigations, human relations, report writing, defensive tactics, first aid, CPR, and firearms training.
Minimum Qualifications
- 19 years of age or older.
- A United States Citizen.
- High School Diploma or GED
- Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of application and a valid Florida driver's license at time of appointment.
- NOTE: YOUR DRIVING HISTORY WILL BE THOROUGHLY REVIEWED AND MAY BE GROUNDS FOR DISQUALIFICATION.
- Must possess a certified copy of a Birth Certificate.
- Must possess a Social Security card.
- Must complete the prescribed Physical Abilities Assessment (PAA).
- Provide a copy of military discharge, DD-214 (if applicable).
- May not have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
- Must pass prescribed physical examination.
- Applicant's vision must meet Florida Drivers License requirements.
- Cannot have tattoos that are visible to the public while wearing the standard uniform of the day or Class A uniform (long sleeve).
- Must not have used any illegal drugs within 36 months of making application.
- Must be of good moral character.
- No felony convictions, arrests or other law enforcement interaction involving perjury, false statements, domestic violence or criminal traffic offenses will be thoroughly reviewed and may be grounds for disqualification.
- Will undergo criminal records check which includes fingerprints.
- Must be six (6) months tobacco free at the time of application.
- Must successfully pass an extensive background investigation and polygraph examination.
