When you dial 9-1-1 in Unincorporated Hillsborough County, your emergency call is routed to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Communications Bureau for immediate assistance. Fire or Medical dispatch are connected when necessary.
The following are some tips to get emergency help to you without delays:
9-1-1 IS FOR EMERGENCIES ONLY
An emergency is when immediate police, fire or medical assistance is necessary to protect life or property.
Note: WE CURRENTLY DO NOT HAVE THE ABILITY TO RECEIVE 9-1-1 CALLS VIA TEXT, FACEBOOK OR TWITTER
KNOW THE LOCATION OF THE EMERGENCY
Calls received via cell phone do not have the exact location. Failure to have this information can cause a delay in response time for law enforcement, fire and medical personnel.
ENSURE YOUR HOUSE ADDRESS IS CLEARLY MARKED AND VISIBLE FROM THE STREET
Responding law enforcement, fire and medical personnel need to locate you in the most timely and effective manner. Poorly marked addresses make it difficult and critical time is wasted.
LISTEN CAREFULLY TO THE CALL TAKER'S QUESTIONS
We need to know (at a minimum):
- What is the emergency – is it medical, fire or law enforcement related?
- Where is the emergency?
- How to contact you – phone number where you can be reached if we need to call you back or if we get disconnected
Do not hang up until you are advised to do so by the call taker.
BE ASSURED – HELP IS ON THE WAY
Do not call back on 9-1-1 unless the situation has changed. Continuing to call 9-1-1 ties up lines and prevents other people from reporting their emergency.
TEACH YOUR CHILDREN THEIR HOME ADDRESS AND PHONE NUMBER
Realize that, in case of emergencies, they may be the only one available to call 9-1-1.
REMOVE BATTERIES FROM OLD CELL PHONES
Children allowed to play with them can inadvertently dial 9-1-1. Just imagine you or your loved one needing emergency services and not being able to get through because all available resources are tied up trying to locate an emergency that is not occurring.
IF YOU MISDIAL 9-1-1
Do not hang up. Stay on the line and advise the call taker. Otherwise a deputy must be dispatched to try and locate you, which ties up valuable resources.
ALL NON-EMERGENCY CALLS CAN BE HANDLED BY DIALING THE HILLSBOROUGH SHERIFF'S OFFICE'S NON-EMERGENCY TELEPHONE NUMBER:
