  • Log in to Off Duty Jobs

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office administrates the off-duty work of Sheriff's deputies. Organizations wishing to hire deputies for off-duty work should call 247-8614 between the hours of 8:30 A.M. and 4:30 P.M.

The services provided are intended for use by deputies authorized for off-duty assignments.

What are the costs associated with hiring an off-duty deputy?

The basic cost of employing a deputy in an off-duty status is $28.00 per hour, per deputy with a three-hour minimum. There is also an administrative fee of $4.00 per hour, per deputy paid to the Sheriff’s Office for expenditures such as a Sheriff’s Office vehicle, uniforms, and other expenses. Employers of off-duty deputies are responsible for completing an indemnification agreement and providing workmen’s compensation insurance for the deputy while in their employ.

There is also a separate rate for jobs on holidays. It is $34.00 per hour and the administration fee remains at $4. The holidays that we charge extra for are New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. The holiday rate is charged on the actual holiday, regardless of which day the Sheriff's Office gets off from work.

Do the Off Duty Deputies have any police powers while Off Duty, or simply the same authority as a regular citizen?

Deputies working in an off-duty status have the full authority to enforce Florida state law and county ordinances while in an off-duty employment status.

Are they allowed the use of taxpayer purchased equipment (e.g., vehicle, radios, etc.)?

Yes, that is included in the administrative fee of $4.00 per hour, seen in question number 1.

Can any type of business hire such an officer, or are there legal restrictions?

There are numerous restrictions where deputies may be employed. Some of these restrictions are legal ones and some are at the discretion of the Sheriff. One of which is an employment involving the direct sale or distribution of alcoholic beverages. The Sheriff also reserves the right to utilize his discretion in refusing to allow deputies to work for certain employers and/or industries.
