Reserve II Deputy Program

The Reserve II Deputy Program is a volunteer, uniformed Sheriff's Office Support organization open to all persons age 19 and older, on an equal opportunity basis.  Reserve II Deputies work with regular deputies in various assignments.  The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office takes great pride in the civic spirit and willingness to serve displayed by its Reserve II Deputies.

Duties And Responsibilities

Each Reserve II Deputy must serve a minimum of 20 hours each monthReserve II on assigned duties.

The areas of service include:

  • riding with regular patrol deputies
  • traffic control at parades
  • various other law enforcement activities and duties

Reserve II Deputies are often called upon to assist with stake-outs, to secure crime scenes, to render aid during natural disasters and join search parties.  In addition, Reserve II Deputies also accompany deputies assigned to the Canine Section, Warrants Section, Selective Enforcement Squad, Zone Patrol, Vice, Auto Theft Task Force, Aviation Section, Motorcycle Unit, and Marine Unit.

Reserve II Deputies are not paid for their work.  Members serve with no other compensation than the deep sense of pride one attains from participating in the law enforcement process and the sincere appreciation from other members of the Sheriff's Office.

Organizational Structure

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Reserve II Deputies are supervised by a regular deputy assigned as a liaison officer between the Sheriff's Office and Reserve II personnel.  The Reserve II Program is structured in a military-type configuration.  A Reserve II major directs a chain of command consisting of a major, a captain, lieutenants, sergeants, corporals and deputies.

Reserve II Training

Each applicant must attend a 360 hour law enforcement academy accredited by the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission. 

Courses of instruction include:

  • criminal and civil law
  • criminal investigations
  • human relations
  • report writing
  • defense tactics
  • first aid
  • firearms training

Following graduation, Reserve II Deputies are then assigned to work with a regular deputy for 100 hours of field training.  After completion, new personnel are assigned to a permanent Reserve II squad.

Uniforms And Equipment

Reserve II Deputies wear the same basic uniform as a regular deputy sheriff with the following exceptions:  shoulder patches display the word "Reserve II".  The badge and name tag have "Reserve II Deputy inscribed, and the collar brass has the rank on both collars or "HCS" if below rank of Corporal.  Uniforms are furnished, and like regular deputies, Reserve II personnel must purchase their individual service firearm and shoes or boots.  Firearms and foot wear must comply with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Standard Operating Procedures.

Membership Requirements

  • You must be 19 years of age or older.
  • You must  be a High School graduate or possess a GED certificate.
  • You must be in good physical condition.
  • You must possess a Florida Driver's License and proof of insurance.
     
  •   No more than three (3) moving violations within the past five (5) years. (Including adjudication withholds).
      No more than five (5) moving violations total on driving history. (Including adjudication withholds).
  • You must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Never been convicted of a felony.
  • Never been convicted of a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statements.
  • Never been discharged from any of the Armed Forces under dishonorable or undesirable conditions.

If you are interested in volunteering your time and resources to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office by joining the Reserve Program, you should contact the Reserve Deputy Coordinator at the main Homeland Security Division between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. , Monday - Friday, at (813) 247-8614 or (813) 247-8616.

Reserve II orientation meets the first Tuesday of each month at 1800 hours in the SOD roll call room. You must attend this meeting to obtain an application. The academy classes are at night Monday thru Thursday 1800 hrs to 2200 hrs and some all day Saturdays.
