Disturbance At A Juvenile Detention Center:
On January 18, 2015, just after 8 p.m., a G4S staff member at the Florida Department Juvenile Detention Center East-Lake Academy Girls Wing located at 9504 E Columbus Drive in Tampa dialed 9-1-1 and indicated they had a "riot" at the facility. When the first initial deputies entered the detention center, they found several juvenile inmates walking freely around the facility.
Deputies moved further into the facility and found a G4S female staff member struggling to gain control of a combative juvenile. Deputies intervened and helped restrain that juvenile. A total of 15 deputies soon arrived and moved into a common day area of the residential housing unit where 41 female juvenile inmates are housed. Deputies observed a table over turned, a broken water fountain and wires pulled from the security camera.
Deputies began assisting several staff members who were ordering a group of combative juveniles back to their rooms for lock down. During the incident, deputies arrested seven female juvenile inmates and Baker Acted one additional juvenile who was trying to harm herself.
Those juveniles arrested were removed from the facility and taken to the Hillsborough County Juvenile Assessment Center to face new charges. The juvenile who was Baker Acted was taken to the Crisis Center. One juvenile arrested was transported to a local hospital for an injury to her hand she sustained when she punched a detention center employee on his head. There were no other reported injuries.
The detention center was turned back over to G4S staff members once deputies regained control of the facility.
