    Shooting Involving Juveniles:

Based upon the preliminary information at the time of this release, the following circumstances are believed to have led to this incident which remains under investigation.

On July 1, 2015 just before 1 pm, HCSO received a 9-1-1 call that indicated a juvenile had been shot at 5721 Turkey Tree Lane in Dover.

When deputies arrived, they found a 9-year-old male with a single gun shot wound to the face (cheek area). The child was transported by Hillsborough County Fire Rescue to a local hospital where he is listed in serious condition but is expected to survive.

Detectives are currently conducting latent interviews and processing the scene for physical evidence.

What has been determined thus far is that the 9-year-old victim and his two brothers age 11 and 13 were home alone while their mother was at work. The mother had recently obtained a .45 cal semi-automatic handgun from a friend and had locked the gun in her bedroom by securing the bedroom door with a padlock and hasp.

The three boys manged to get inside the mother's bedroom by removing the door lock hasp. The three brother obtained the handgun and took the gun outside to play with it in the woods behind the residence.

The boys returned inside the residence with the handgun and brought the gun to their bedroom where they all sleep. It was there that the 11-year-old discharged one round that struck the 9-year-old brother in the face.

HCSO investigators with the Child Protective Division are on scene assisting in the investigation. The family is being fully cooperative with investigators. We are not releasing any names at this time until it's been determined if any criminal charges will be filed.

    The investigation continues.
