    Deputy Injured During a Rescue Attempt

    A mobile home fire results in two deaths.

    Victim # 1 - a two-year-old male (deceased)

    Victim # 2 - a 58-year-old female (deceased)

    Victim # 3 - a 43-year-old male (non-life threatening injuries)

    Victim # 4 - Deputy Dane Tewmey, age 29 (non-life threatening injuries)
    Assigned to Uniform Patrol District 2, employed since October 2009


    On 07/20/2016, just after 11 pm, HCSO received a 911 call regarding a residential (single wide mobile home) fire at 5319 Garden Lane in Tampa. When deputies arrived, they observed a single wide mobile home fully engulfed. Deputies spotted an adult male, 43 on the ground suffering from smoke inhalation and minor burns. The male advised his mother and a child were in the house. Deputies could hear a female yelling from inside. Deputy Dane Tewmey immediately entered the home to rescue the occupants. Deputy Tewmey reached the adult female and was attempting to remove her from the home when the fire flashed and caused an explosion. Deputy Tewmey was knocked backward and received burns to his arms and hands. Deputy Tewmey tried to push forward back into the home, however, the fire was to intense to go back in.

    Hillsborough County Fire Rescue quickly arrived and was eventually able to extinguish the fire. Upon searching the residence, A 58-year-old female and 2-year-old male were located deceased inside the residence. Tentative identification of the victims have been made, however official positive identification will be made by the Medical Examiner's Office.

    The State Fire Marshals Office, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner's Office and HCSO detectives are conducting a joint investigation to determine the cause and origin of the fire and official cause of death.

    Deputy Tewmey was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for smoke inhalation, burns to his arms and hands and was later released. Deputy Tewmey works midnight shift and will be home recovering.
