On 03/08/2016 at approximately 9:30 pm, HCSO received three (3) simultaneous calls from citizens regarding a black pickup truck
traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of US Hwy 301 just south of County Road 674.

A uniform patrol deputy was in the area and observed the suspect vehicle, a 2002 Dodge Durango 4x4 pickup truck, black exterior color traveling northbound in the southbound lanes.  The deputy began to parallel the suspect vehicle from the proper lane with his emergency equipment activated in an effort to alert oncoming motorists.

All available patrol units from the surrounding area were immediately dispatched to US 301 in an attempt to stop the southbound traffic in the path of the suspect vehicle.  The Aviation Section was also deployed to the area.

The suspect vehicle continued northbound on US 301 in the southbound lane and drove straight through the red traffic signals at Big Bend Road.  At County Road 672, the suspect vehicle crossed the median back onto the northbound lanes as the driver began to throw numerous unknown items out of the vehicle.

HCSO units were then instructed to fall back and await the arrival of the Aviation Section but the suspect vehicle quickly crossed the median again back into the southbound oncoming traffic. The suspect vehicle posed an imminent threat to the motorists on US 301 and the driver gave no indication of an intention to yield or stop.

Deputies were directed to deploy Stop Sticks between Rhodine Road and Symmes Road on US 301.  The suspect vehicle's front right tire was deflated by the action but the vehicle continued northbound without stopping.

Just south of Murphy Road on US 301, deputies observed the suspect vehicle intentionally driving directly toward the path of oncoming traffic and were forced to initiate a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) that caused the suspect vehicle to spin around and temporarily stop.

As deputies attempted to surround the suspect vehicle with their patrol vehicles, the driver rammed a marked patrol unit in an attempt to escape.  Deputies quickly positioned their vehicles to prevent the suspect vehicle from getting around the marked units and arrested the driver without further incident.

As a result of these actions, no motorists, other citizens, or deputies were injured.  Three (3) HCSO vehicles and the suspect vehicle received minor damage.

An inventory of the suspect vehicle subsequent to the driver's arrest produced a large bag (approximately 1 pound) of an unknown white, granular, powdery substance packaged similar to narcotics.  The substance could not be identified at the scene but will be sent for testing and may result in additional criminal charges.  Deputies traveled the entire route of the suspect vehicle but were unable to locate any of the items the driver threw out of the window during the incident.

The driver Derek Wayne Hyde was arrested.  The criminal results of a DUI investigation are currently pending but Hyde refused to perform required tests related to his BAC and urine.

    The investigation continues
