On November 16, 2017 at approximately 12:27 p.m., deputies responded to the Bealls Outlet, located at 9624 S. Hwy. 301, in reference to a theft in progress call for service. Upon arrival, Derek Thomas fled on foot through the parking lot. After a brief foot pursuit, Derek Thomas was taken into custody near the intersection of Boyette Rd./S. Hwy. 301.
A black, Infiniti sedan, belonging to Derek Thomas, was also observed fleeing the area. Detectives observed the vehicle at La Petite Way/Andy Dr. and were able to stop the vehicle. The occupants were identified as Joseph Brown and Alana Burnett. Detectives searched the vehicle and located marijuana, a very large amount of store merchandise and clothes with the tags attached, along with several anti-shoplifting devices. Detectives believe the merchandise was stolen from several different areas between Riverview and Orlando.
