    Details:

After a three-month-long investigation, HCSO detectives working out of District III arrested two individuals and obtained an arrest warrant for a third in relation to an organized fraud scheme that targeted mostly elderly Hispanics in an attempt to con them out of money and valuables. The trio defrauded their victims to the tune of over $152,034 in cash and $34,400 in jewelry in twelve separate cases between Hillsborough, Polk and Lake County. Ten of those cases originated in Hillsborough County. Due to the multiple jurisdictions, the Florida Attorney General’s Office of Statewide Prosecution assumed responsibility for the prosecution of the case.

Jhon Figueroa was arrested on June 12th and Siomara Jimenez was arrested on May 24th. Both were booked into Orient Road Jail and charged with 35 combined charges. Both have since bonded out and have been released. Marino Jimenez Quintana has an active warrant for his arrest with 13 separate charges. His last known address was in Kissimmee.

“Preying on the compassion of others is the worst kind of fraud,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “These criminals pretend to be your friendly next door neighbor and all the while they are stealing from those who want to help others. With the charges the Attorney General is filing, I am hopeful they will pay a heavy price.”

During the month of September 2017, Jhon Figueroa, Siomara Jimenez and Marino Jimenez Quintana began surveying parking lots targeting elderly Hispanic victims to defraud. They would convince their victim that they had a winning Lotto ticket that could not be cashed because they were in the country illegally. The suspects would place a telephone call in front of their victim to someone pretending to be with the Florida Lottery so the victim could hear the fraudulent instructions on how to redeem their prize. The person on the other end of the line would instruct them that the only way to redeem their money was to prove they had cash on hand as a form of collateral. The suspects would then convince the victim to provide the collateral to help them out. The suspects would then drive the victim to their bank where the victim would remove anywhere from $2,000 - $40,000 from their bank account or they would hand over jewelry and cash on hand. The suspects would then leave with the money or jewelry and never to return or repay the amounts to the victim.
