On 11/28/2017 at approximately 2:30 p.m., the homeowner identified as Courtney Mallory advised she was home alone when she observed a white vehicle parked in front of her residence. She observed a man, later identified as Chike Tim, exit the passenger side of the vehicle and walk towards her residence. Moments later, Tim forced open the front door, causing structural damage to the door frame. Mallory armed herself with a 9mm handgun and fired one round towards Tim. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
A court-authorized search warrant was executed at the residence. Chike Tim was located in front of the residence by the front door. He had appeared to be socks covering his hands. Illegal narcotics and approximately $66,000 in cash was located inside the residence.
A witness told detectives he was with Chike Tim earlier in the day and overheard him on the phone discussing breaking into a residence in Brandon. The witness stated he heard Tim claim the residence had a lot of narcotics and money inside. Phone records confirmed the telephone number Tim called belonged to Earnest Cherry, Jr.
Detectives began investigating Cherry and discovered that he was on Federal Probation at the time of the incident. They also learned that he had borrowed a 2005 white Pontiac earlier in the day. The witness identified Chike Tim, via a photograph, as the person with Earnest Cherry when he borrowed the car. Cherry advised the witness to report their car stolen, but did not advise why.
