Sheriff Chad Chronister Announces New DUI Enforcement Squad:
Since 2014, Hillsborough County has ranked in the top three counties in the State of Florida for alcohol and drug related crashes. Findings published by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) in December of 2018 show Hillsborough County ranked number one in the state for impaired driving.
To address this dangerous trend, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is increasing its already existing DUI enforcement efforts by forming a dedicated centralized DUI Enforcement Squad. This squad will consist of 20 deputies and two supervisors specially trained to detect and apprehend impaired and intoxicated drivers.
"We have zero tolerance for reckless individuals who choose to drive while impaired," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "By launching a new DUI Enforcement Squad, we hope to not only create safer roadways, but also use these deputies to educate the community. Part of their role will include instructing businesses on how to be responsible vendors and holding workshops at area high schools to teach young people the importance of driving sober."
On Friday, April 12, the Sheriff's Office and its DUI Enforcement Squad will partner with Tampa Police and Florida Highway Patrol to host a joint DUI operation. Deputies will patrol areas of Incorporated and Unincorporated Hillsborough County to deter drivers from getting behind the wheel impaired. They will conduct enforcement efforts on state roads located within the operation area, including State Road 60 and Interstate 4. The Mobile Breath Alcohol Testing Unit (B.A.T. Mobile) will be located at 2109 E 11th Avenue in Tampa, in addition to a jail transport van provided by HCSO for drivers arrested for driving under the influence.
