    Death Investigation Involving Arrestee

Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is investigating a death involving an arestee.
    • 529 S Parsons Avenue,
    • Brandon, FL 33511

    Details:

On August 13, just after 11 p.m., deputies responded to an apartment at 529 S Parsons Avenue for reports of a domestic-related assault involving a gun. When deputies arrived, Kaynesha Rhodes, 24, was being restrained by an individual inside the apartment but no longer actively resisting. Deputies placed Rhodes in handcuffs to prevent further violence and awaited EMS, which had already been dispatched to treat the victims.

Speaking with two individuals on scene, deputies learned that Rhodes had once lived with them at the apartment. She came over that night with a firearm, pointing the weapon at two people inside. The victims tried to exit the apartment, but Rhodes locked the door and would not let them leave. Rhodes then put the firearm on the counter and picked up a baseball bat. She struck one of the victims in the head. At some point during the altercation, Rhodes also physically assaulted a child, biting off part of the juvenile's finger. A neighbor heard the commotion and called 911.

While speaking with the witnesses, deputies diverted their attention back to Rhodes, who was breathing but now appeared unresponsive. They immediately redirected EMS from the victims to Rhodes, who was transported across the street, less than one mile away from the apartment complex, to Brandon Regional Hospital. Once Hillsborough County Fire Rescue arrived at the hospital, hospital staff continued medical treatment, but ultimately, Rhodes was pronounced dead.

An official cause of death has not yet been determined and a toxicology report is still under review. The Medical Examiner's Office is working to see if previous medical conditions played a factor in Rhodes' death.

No one at the apartment is facing any charges in connection to this incident. If Rhodes had not been pronounced dead, she would be facing several felony charges including Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon, Aggravated Assault with a Firearm and False Imprisonment.
