The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is joining forces with civilian volunteers on Friday, February 8, to help keep an eye out at this year's Florida State Fair Student Day.
Sheriff Chad Chronister will deploy the Community Action Team (CAT), comprised of volunteer members from local community groups, the Black, Indian and Hispanic Sheriff's Advisory Councils and sworn law enforcement officers. Together, volunteers and deputies will walk the fairgrounds working to ensure students are behaving while providing an additional adult presence on one of the busiest nights of the fair.
"Since the team was implemented five years ago, CAT has become an important part of our overall fair security plan," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "Just having the presence of these community leaders, who are known and trusted, helps bring down the number of trespass warnings and arrests. We want students to have fun while being safe and we are able to make that possible with the added eyes and ears of these important volunteers."
Elementary students will be allowed into the fair only with a parent, guardian or adult. Middle and high school students must have their free ticket provided by Hillsborough County Schools plus their student photo ID with them to be admitted into the fair. All students who plan to use their free fair ticket after 6 p.m. must be accompanied by an adult.
