Battle of the Belts 2019:
HCSO will recognize students who participated in a month-long effort to increase seatbelt usage among teenagers tomorrow morning in the annual Battle of the Belts Campaign award ceremony. The event will begin at 9:00 a.m. at Plant City High School, 1 Raider Place, that honors students who got the most creative with the initiative through PSA videos, campaign and posters.
"Anything we can do to help keep teen drivers safe and help get them home every day is important, but that message is strongest when it is delivered by their peers," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "They have a unique perspective other teens relate too and I am glad to support them and help make a difference through the Battle of the Belts."
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for American teenagers. Teens have the highest fatality rate in motor vehicle crashes than any other age group, along with the lowest safety belt use rates of all drivers. This rate is even lower when there are multiple teens in the vehicle. This effort is spearheaded through a partnership between HCSO, Geico and Hillsborough County Public Schools.
