At 10:47 p.m. on January 28
, a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office deputy observed a minivan stopped in the eastbound travel lanes of Woodberry Road, just east of Essex Road, in Tampa. The vehicle was in park with the engine running and revving. The deputy found an adult male unresponsive in the driver's seat. He removed him from the van and began performing CPR. The man appeared to have gunshot wounds to his upper body. The victim was transported to Tampa General Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
After interviewing friends of the victim, detectives learned the victim was in the process of making a drug deal at the time of the shooting. McCourt met the victim to buy marijuana. In the process of the transaction, McCourt shot the victim before fleeing from the van.
