Troy Milton Tatum
Around noon on Wednesday, July 3
, District II deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office were responding to a call of a possible shooting, which turned out to be unfounded, when a deputy observed a suspicious vehicle, a silver Ford Fusion, parked in the middle of the roadway on Smith Ryals Road. As the deputy approached the car, the driver accelerated and drove towards the deputy's lane of travel in an attempt to hit him head on. The deputy made an evasive maneuver to avoid being struck by the Ford. The driver continued southbound on Smith Ryals Rd.
The deputy initiated his emergency lights and made a U-turn in an attempt to follow the Ford. At the intersection of Smith Ryals Road and State Road 60, the Ford failed to stop for the stop sign, traveling across all four lanes of traffic and striking another vehicle. The adult male driver of the other vehicle was not injured.
The driver of the Ford was identified as Troy Milton Tatum, 27, of Lithia. A female passenger in Tatum's car was medevaced to a local hospital. Two children, ages 3 and 6, who were also in the vehicle were taken by ground to Tampa General Hospital. All had non-life threatening injuries. Tatum was uninjured.
Tatum was discovered to have an outstanding warrant out of Polk County for Resisting an Officer without Violence and Possession of Cannabis. Following the crash, Tatum will now face charges of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer with a Motor Vehicle and Fleeing to Elude.
Tatum's booking photo is attached. He is being held without bond.
