Hillsborough County Agencies Collaborate on Active Shooter Safety Training
- July 25, 2019
- Time: 4:45 PM
Hillsborough County, Fla. (July 25, 2019) - Hillsborough County's first ever multi-agency, multi-disciplinary Active Shooter Hostile Event Response (ASHER) training will be held on Friday, July 26, at 10 a.m. at Pizzo Elementary School on the University of South Florida campus.
Sixteen agencies will participate, including the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, police departments from Tampa, Temple Terrace, USF, Plant City, Tampa International Airport, and the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa, as well as fire rescue departments from Tampa, Temple Terrace, and Plant City. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), MacDill Air Force Base, and Florida Highway Patrol will also participate in the training on Friday morning.
ASHER training is designed to test operations in the event of a threat where multiple agencies rush to the scene and medical care is needed. It allows law enforcement and fire rescue personnel who usually do not have the opportunity to work together to practice operating as one at the scene of an active shooting.
Friday's training exercise dubbed "Operatio n Guardian 1," will involve nearly 100 volunteers role-playing as elementary school students, teachers, and assailants.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister and Hillsborough County Fire Rescue Special Operations Chief Robert Collins will be available for comment on Friday before the start of the exercise at 9:30 a.m.
Media on site can get video of rescue personnel staging for the mock incident. Video of the exercise happening inside Pizzo Elementary will be provided to the media immediately after training by an HCSO pool camera.
Media outlets planning to attend should park in Lot 22D of the Yuengling Center located at 12499 USF Bull Run Drive, Tampa, FL 33617 (see attached map). Please arrive no later than 9:15 a.m. USF Bull Run Drive from Fowler Avenue will be closed off to traffic leading up to and during the course of the training exercise. Television news outlets are asked not to park at Pizzo Elementary for morning live shots, as it will interfere with set up for the training.
Media outlets are asked to advise residents that they will likely see an increased law enforcement presence around USF during the course of the training, which should end around noon on Friday.
