As Hillsborough County students return to school on Monday, August 12, Sheriff Chad Chronister and Superintendent Jeff Eakins are working together to make sure the first day of class is a safe one.

The Sheriff and Superintendent will be greeting students, parents, school resource deputies and crossing guards throughout the morning beginning at Mort Elementary School located at 1806 E Bearss Avenue in Tampa. The elementary school start time is 7:40 a.m. From there, Sheriff Chronister will head to nearby Buchanan Middle School, 1001 W Bearss Avenue, to welcome the newly hired middle school crossing guards as they work to help students across the road safely. Buchanan is one of several schools that received infrastructure
updates in Hillsborough County over the last few months. A new marked crosswalk was painted and school warning signage installed near North Boulevard and Lake Magdalene Boulevard. The middle school start time is 9:25 a.m.

This is the first academic year that crossing guards have been assigned to busy crosswalks outside of middle schools in Hillsborough County. An added 11 elementary schools were assigned crossing guards following an extensive study led by HCSO.

In addition, the Sheriff and Superintendent teamed up over the summer to produce a public service announcement (PSA) on vaping that will begin airing on the morning shows of all middle and high schools this year in order to teach students the dangers of vaping and the risks of getting caught vaping with illegal substances.
