The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has made an arrest in the shooting death of a 14-year-old girl in Brandon.
Dereck Polanco Rivera, 16, was arrested Tuesday
evening, June 25
, at his home at 8603 Postwood Circle in Tampa. Rivera is facing a felony charge of Second Degree Murder. Rivera is a certified gang member with the "TC Boys," a gang based in the Town N Country area. The shooting is not believed to be gang related.
Around 1:30 a.m. on Monday, June 17
, deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office were called to a Walgreens parking lot located at 128 E Brandon Blvd for a report of a shooting. Deputies located a 14-year-old girl in the back seat of a car with a gunshot wound to the head.
Three others were in the vehicle at the time of the shooting, one adult female driver and two additional juveniles.
After interviewing the three witnesses, deputies learned that the occupants had just left a house party on Rollingwood Lane in Valrico.
A male occupant in the vehicle had a long-standing "beef" with Dereck Rivera, which is why detectives believe Rivera targeted the car the young girl happened to be riding in. It is unclear what caused the conflict between Rivera and the male juvenile.
At the intersection of Kingsway Road and East Clay Avenue in Brandon, about a mile from the Walgreens, Rivera fired multiple shots at the vehicle. One bullet went through the rear window, hitting the 14-year-old victim in the head. The victim was taken to Brandon
hospital, then flown to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition, where she died a day later.
Rivera's booking photo is attached. He was transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center (JAC) Tuesday
night. At this time, Rivera is facing a charge of Second Degree Murder. The State Attorney's Office will determine if Rivera will be charged as an adult.
