On May 20, 2019, just after midnight, an off-duty HCSO deputy had just finished working security detail at the Islamic Society of Tampa Bay mosque when he heard gun shots coming from the parking lot of the mosque. The deputy found one man holding a gun and another man who had been shot at least two times.
The deputy was able to detain the suspect shooter until additional units arrived. A firearm was recovered from the scene. The victim was transported to Tampa General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
At this time, detectives believe the victim and the suspect knew each other. Both were at the mosque attending prayer services. The suspected shooter is cooperating. All updates will come from the Public Affairs Office. This is an active investigation.
