As Hillsborough County Schools prepare to release students for summer break, Sheriff Chad Chronister issued a Public Service Announcement (PSA) to parents on Friday in an effort to prevent and reduce summer crime. In the PSA, Sheriff Chronister asked parents to sit down with their children and create ground rules.
"It's unfortunate, but crime goes up during the summer. Right now is the time to talk to your kids about what you expect in terms of behavior during the break," said Sheriff Chronister. He asked parents to educate their children about the value of property and staying away from things that are not theirs, in addition to advising children to make smart decisions when they are with friends.
"If your friend breaks the law, you may also be held responsible for that crime, even if you weren't the one directly responsible," said Sheriff Chronister. He said the most important steps a parent can take to keep their children out of trouble during the summer is to set a curfew each night and know where their children are at all times.
