Hillsborough County
Chad Chronister, Sheriff

  • It's tax season, prime-time for scammers to steal your money.

As you gather your W-2s, we want to remind you to protect yourself this filing season.

It's harder for a criminal to commit tax fraud or steal your identity if you follow these steps:

    • Choose a certified tax preparer or online filing service that you trust, some people and websites are only out to steal your personal information.
    • Protect your computers and email accounts with firewalls and anti-virus software.
    • The IRS won't send you an email, text, or contact you on social media. Be leery of those aggressive, urgent demands to pay money.
    • When in doubt, call the IRS directly to ask questions.

If you think you've been scammed, you can always call the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office at 813-247-8200
